Gay, Latino and Macho: The struggle to be queer and out in a machismo culture Story

Gay, Latino and Macho: The struggle to be queer and out in a machismo culture
Story by Albert Serna Jr. and Adolfo Tigerino

Forced onto a school bus as the day came to an end on a Thursday in 2005, Josue was frightened and uncertain what the future held for him and his companions. Chaperons from the strict Latino Pentecostal church took away all methods of communication so they were virtually removed from society. Arriving at a ranch in the middle of nowhere under the cover of darkness, the teens were forced into separate rooms. Each day they were made to pray and denounce their sexuality. It was believed that the teens had demons controlling them. And, before he was allowed to be “cured,” the scared 17-year-old was held down against his will while several people screamed in attempts to speak with the alleged demons within.

They performed an exorcism to cure him of his homosexuality.

For Josue Velasquez, now 26, the idea of being gay and Latino did not sit well with his religious mother. She upheld a standard of masculinity called machismo that conflicted with the person Velasquez is. In the Latino culture there is a belief that men need to be hyper-masculine, domineering, controlling, and without the slightest hint of femininity. The culture of machismo is a conflict between the two identities; gay and Latino. The ideology requires such a high standard of masculinity that it is nearly impossible to reach. Critics of machismo such as journalist and feminist Germaine Greer have said, “The tragedy of machismo is that a man is never quite man enough.”

Being raised in a machismo culture impacted Velasquez’s his life, and his future. As a teen, he dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. His mother would crush those dreams one day when he showed her his prized drawings. He was a junior in high school and had spent most of the year preparing a portfolio. When he told her of his plans to attend fashion design school, she walked him out to the yard, threw his drawings in the barbecue, and made him light his portfolio on fire.

Nick Jonas To Be Very Naked & Possibly Gay In New Show “Kingdom”

Nick Jonas just can’t keep his clothes on. The 21-year-old singer-actor tearing off his clothes in the vicinity of practically any gay man. Nick managed to keep his clothes on around Andy Cohen, however, when he visited Watch What Happens Live! But that was a rare moment of composure, as he revealed that he just did “a lot of nudity’ for his new  show, Kingdom.jonas

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 10-episode DirecTV series centers on a gym for Mixed Martial Arts competitors in Venice Beach, where there’s “just as much drama outside of the ring as there is in it.” Some of that drama will include Nick, who’s character has several sex scenes and — to Andy’s delight — a “big storyline” around his sexuality.

Below, check out a preview for Kingdom, coming to DirecTV, October 8:

Video: William Shatner & LeVar Burton drink wine & talk Reading Rainbow

KIRK AND BURTON

Burton and Shatner Talk Life over Wine

LeVar Burton is billed as an “educator” in the the latest installment of William Shatner’s Brown Bag Wine Tasting. He’s certainly that, though most people probably think of Burton as an actor first. Either way, the former Star Trek: The Next Generation star and Reading Rainbow creator/host chats with Star Trek’s original Captain Kirk as they drink a mystery bottle of white wine, the label of which is obscured by a brown bag. That’s the concept of the Ora.tv show: drink and talk, drink and talk, and drink and talk some more.

Shatner steers the conversation from Burton’s life and career to the merits of the wine being imbibed. Shatner asks Burton to recount his youth, prompting Burton to note, “If we’re going to talk about my childhood, wine should be involved.” Shatner then asks Burton to describe the wine as if it were a child; trust us, you don’t want to mishttp://on.ora.tv/1lM6514s that exchange. Burton later pays heartfelt tribute to his mom and also discusses how Reading Rainbowhas evolved from its days as an iconic educational television show into a modern-day digital library. And, yes, by the end, Shatner reveals the identity of that wine they’ve been drinking.

5 Things You Never Knew About Joan Rivers

joan rivers1

Joan Rivers was a remarkable comedian, known for her acerbic wit and blunt honesty.

Many saw her stand-up routines or watched her E! TV show, “Fashion Police,” but Rivers, who died Sept. 4. at 81, was a complicated, vivacious woman with a storied past. Here are a few things about her that casual fans may not have known.

Joan Rivers Dead at 81

1. Joan Rivers Was Not Her Given Name: The comedian was born Joan Molinsky, but at the behest of her agent, Tony Rivers, she adopted a stage name. On a whim, she chose “Joan Rivers,” just because it felt right. “Having a stage name made it easier to perform in those raunchy nightclubs,” she told the Evening News newspaper in 1986. “Joan Rivers was like a party dress I put on, so in those early days, she was only the tiniest part of me and Joan Molinsky was still frightened and confused and bewildered in her life.”

2. Bill Cosby Was Responsible for Her Big Break: At first, Rivers became famous for being a guest host on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show.” “The night before I went on Carson, a comic bombed and Bill Cosby — who was white hot at that moment — he had seen me in the Village and he said to them, ‘You might as well use Joan. She can’t be any worse than the guy you had on last night!'” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I was brought on in the last 10 minutes of the show — the worst slot. And God bless Johnny Carson, he said right there on the air, ‘You’re going to be a big star.'” He was right.

3. She Was Open About Everything, Even Plastic Surgery: “I just hosted the Miss USA Pageant and, let me tell you, beautiful gets you everywhere. The New York Times had an article maybe six months ago: Babies respond to pretty faces. So stop telling everyone it’s OK not to be pretty! If you can fix it, fix it!” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2010. “If it makes you happier. I love to look in the mirror and say, ‘For 77, you look good.’ That’s all. I don’t care what anyone says. Not bad for 77.” However, it wasn’t always easy. In a clip from her reality TV series with her daughter, Melissa, Rivers was captured by cameras crying before going into surgery. “Oh God, what a s***** business this is,” she said. “You have to look good.”

4. She Had a Big Social Circle: The one regret Rivers had about the 2012 documentary made about her, “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work,” was that it included a mean statement she made about fellow comedian Kathy Griffin. “She’s my best friend. I adore Kathy,” Rivers told EW. “I wish they had made my love of her stronger.” Rivers also talked about a friendship with Barbara Walters and Nancy Reagan.

5. She Was a Huge Animal Lover: After her husband committed suicide in 1987, she too considered ending her life. However, she was saved by her dog, Spike. “I was sitting in this big empty house in Bel Air, with a phone with five extensions which we no longer needed. I had the gun in my lap, and the dog sat on the gun. I lecture on suicide because things turn around,” she told the Daily Beast. “I tell people this is a horrible, awful dark moment, but it will change and you must know it’s going to change and you push forward. I look back and think, ‘Life is great, life goes on. It changes.'” As she got older, she made sure to set aside money for her pets when she made her will.
