The “religious police” from the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice arrested the 24-year-old for the crimes of “promoting debauchery” and “promoting homosexual contact”.

The trial in the city of Manama heard that the man’s mobile phone contained several “immoral” pictures and that he had used Twitter to try to meet other gay men.

Jason Rahlan from the Human Rights Campaign told The Advocate the sentence was “a horrific reminder of the dangers LGBT people face in Saudi Arabia and the dozens of nations around the world where it’s a crime to simply be who you are”.

Homosexuality is a crime in Saudi Arabia and among all other member-nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council, it is punishable by life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Meanwhile, over in India, the newly-elected government announced that it had no intention to repeal or amend Section 377 of the India Penal Code that criminalises homosexuality, according to India Today.
